The Road to Damascus looks at the past year of my friend's life, learning to come to terms with the loss of her mother. It is her journey on the road to recovery. Her mother was a practising Irish buddhist. The repeated symbol on the floor pattern, is of an Eternal Knot, representing the endless cycle of life and death. Her pathway forward is fragmented as she learns to find meaning in her emotions of love, loss, anger and peace. The painting is inspired by her words ... “I will relatively always look much the same on the outside, but it's on the inside that I need to work on”.
This was one of the hardest paintings I found myself painting, taking over 6 months to complete.
This piece is unique to my other work as it can be displayed in either of 4 ways representing how our life’s path is never straightforward.
